8. Fruit juices
Like we discovered above, fruit should be consumed as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. But, as it contains sugar in the form of fructose, if we consume too much fruit, we may be scuppering our weight loss plans. When thinking about your five a day target of fresh produce, aim to make three or four of your portions, vegetables, and one or two fruits.
Fruit juice, with no added sugars, can make up one of these portions – but that’s where it ends. When fruit is juiced, it has all of the gut loving fibre removed. So, in the same way as when fruit is dried, a lot of the volume is lost through the juicing process, thereby concentrating the fructose content and adding to its calorie content, via excess sugar.
By all means add a glass of unsweetened fruit juice to your daily diet, but make sure it’s a small glass and hydrate fully on water throughout the day.
