A further benefit to regular exercise is an increase in energy levels. Which is particularly beneficial if we suffer with fatigue and sluggishness on a daily basis due to health conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome.

A study in 2008 successfully demonstrated that aerobic exercise resulted in “beneficial effects on feelings of energy” in young people who led an otherwise sedentary lifestyle but had unexplained persistent fatigue. Even exercising at a low intensity seemed to significantly improve the energy levels of this group of people.

In fact, studies have shown that exercise can actually be more beneficial at managing chronic fatigue syndrome than more passive treatments such as relaxation therapies, with no additional negative impact on symptoms. Sufferers who exercised reported better sleep, physical function (due to increased energy) and all round general health.

The feel good aspect of exercise, that post-training high we can get, also helps to boost our energy levels on an emotional level. How often have you felt more productive after you’ve been for a run or have visited the gym? It’s an amazing feeling, if only we could bottle it!
