Regular walking is super heart healthy

As well as burning calories (and fat), taking a brisk, 30 minute walk each day will help to keep your heart healthy. This is because any kind of aerobic exercise boosts circulation by making the heart pump faster, and in turn, this means lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is bad for the heart and is one of the indicators for heart disease.

In fact, scientific research suggests that taking a brisk, 30 minute walk at least five times a week can reduce an individual’s risk of developing coronary heart disease by around 19%. And another plus point is that the more often you walk and the brisker the pace, the more the risk of developing coronary heart disease decreases (to a certain point, taking into account other heath and lifestyle factors such as diet, drinking alcohol, smoking and stress).

So if walking were available on prescription, we should all be prescribed it. (But since it isn’t, we should all just get our walking shoes on and do it anyway!)
