While occasionally consuming ready meals for lunch might not be so harmful, they’re really not something you want to choose as a regular midday option, as they won’t help you swerve the dreaded afternoon slump.

Ready meals are typically extremely processed and contain excessive amounts of salt, fats, sugars, and unhealthy sweeteners, so they can’t give your body the energy it needs to perform at its peak. They aren’t ideal fuel for the rest of the day at all, as they are often lacking in fibre, vitamins, minerals and nutrients and they can cause inflammation, which leads to stress, insomnia – and a drop in mental and physical performance.

Over time, choosing ready meals for lunch could contribute to a host of health problems, like cardiovascular disorders – and research has uncovered a strong link between ultra-processed foods and increased chances of colorectal cancer.

Many ready meals are also calorie bombs and if you eat them daily, you could not only experience regular energy dips, you could be adding on unnecessary inches! Studies confirm an association between the regular consumption of ready meals and higher rates of obesity, so if your goal is to stay slim and full of zing, then give ready meals a big thumbs down!
