If you want to swerve the dreaded 2pm energy collapse, you’ll want to stay away from consuming refined carbs at lunch.

Refined carbs are digested and absorbed by the body for fuel far quicker than their more wholesome wholemeal siblings. Eating them causes a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, which can make you feel full of energy initially – but when that wears off, your blood sugar will drop dramatically.

This can cause you to experience symptoms like brain fog and can make you feel flat, tired and lethargic – not ideal when you have a full inbox and piles of work to get through!

In fact, it’s not a good idea to eat too many refined carbs at any time of day, as studies have found a strong link between refined carbohydrates like white bread, biscuits and rice, and diabetes.

But as other research has discovered that eating refined carbs also results in decreased mental performance, you should definitely give them a pass at lunch, so you can continue being productive.
