Why do we need to moisturise?

Our skin happily goes about its work each day, protecting us and regulating bodily processes such as temperature and fluid levels. It also undergoes an important process of repair and renewal overnight, pushing new skin cells to the surface to replace the old, dead ones (skin cells last around 30 days before dying off).

But if we don’t moisturise regularly, or we become dehydrated, have naturally dry skin or the barrier becomes compromised, such as in the case of psoriasis or eczema, it will need a little help.

Dry, dehydrated skin is essentially skin that’s lost moisture, or that doesn’t produce enough sebum. Sebum is the oily, wax-like substance that’s produced by the sebaceous, or oil, glands in the skin to help to protect it. Dry skin can feel rough, tight, itchy and uncomfortable and could become flaky and scaly, which can lead to weeping, bleeding and inflammation.

Prevention of dry skin is therefore essential. It’s important to moisturise both our face and body each day, using products on the face specifically designed for facial skin and likewise for the body. The skin on the face is thinner and contains more oil glands than the skin on the body, and therefore has different needs. The skin on our bodies for example, can tolerate a heavier, oilier cream.

So now, let’s discover the benefits of daily moisturising.
