The same environmental factors that can make our skin dry, can also cause our skin to become irritated or inflamed. But sometimes things going on inside our bodies can also be reflected externally in our skin.

Inflammation is a normal part of our immune response, but chronic inflammation can be caused by the immune system overreacting to what it thinks is a threat, such as in the case of gluten in those with coeliac disease. Coeliac disease and other autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and lupus can lead to inflamed skin, as can allergies to internal or external factors that lead to skin conditions such as eczema and hives.

Skin that has become inflamed can appear red, itchy and scaly. The skin may feel hot to touch and feel like its burning or stinging and may appear raised and thickened over time.

Using a moisturiser that contains soothing, cooling ingredients like oatmeal, honey and chamomile can help to manage the symptoms of inflamed skin and help to prevent flare ups. The short term use of medicated corticosteroid creams can also be helpful, available from your GP on prescription.
