Did you know that if you regularly store opened cans in the fridge, it can be severely hazardous to your health?

This is because it can cause plastic or metal to leach into your food, as most cans are not only made from aluminium, many also have a coating of BPA, to prevent the metal from corroding – and this is a known toxic plastic compound.

Studies have found that over time the leaching from aluminium cans can have a toxic effect on your health, contributing to bone, blood and brain disorders and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons. Other research has shown that ingestion of BPA can cause hormonal disruption, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and reproductive developmental issues.

When you store an open can in the fridge, the acids in foods can interact with the rim of the can and accelerate the metal and BPA leaching process. Without realising it, you could get an even bigger dose of BPA and aluminium than if you were to simply open the food inside straight away and eat it!

In general it’s a good idea not to eat too many canned foods due to the potential for leaching but regardless, you should avoid keeping open cans in the refrigerator. If you repeatedly have food leftover from the cans you open, why not transfer it into a Tupperware container and place that in your fridge instead?
