Avocados boost heart health

If your goal is to ensure optimum heart health, you’ll want to incorporate a little avocado into your life, particularly as research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association has found this healthy habit slashes your risk for coronary heart diseases by 21%!

Scientists evaluated data from over 100,000 adults and discovered that people who ate between two-thirds to a whole avocado a week had a significantly reduced risk of coronary heart disease, along with a 16% decreased chance of developing cardiovascular disease.

The heart-boosting benefits of avocado come from their high content of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as well as a natural plant sterol called beta sitosterol – all of which help lower levels of inflammation and bad LDL cholesterol. Avocados have 5 grams of these heart-friendly fats but only 1 gram of unhealthy saturated fat – and as they are also rich sources of fibre and have little to no sodium (salt) too, they’re the perfect food for heart health.

They are extremely high in potassium, which helps your heart pump blood around your body, as well as magnesium, which decreases blood pressure – so it’s no wonder that so many top cardiologists recommend eating avocados to their patients. Research shows that eating avocados can lead to a lowered chance of developing metabolic syndrome, which increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Why not try replacing salted butter or unhealthy margarine loaded with trans fats with a little avocado on toast in the morning instead? Or the next time you make a sandwich, think about swapping out processed meats or cheese for this heart-healthy fruit? By eating a little avocado every day you’ll definitely be improving your health – and as they are so delicious, we’re certain you won’t ever feel deprived!
