Take Probiotics and Eat Fermented Foods
A relatively new area of research involves the gut and the trillions of good bacteria and viruses called probiotics that reside there. Collectively, these bugs are known as the microbiota. It’s now thought that the gut is the “second brain” as it plays such an important role in the overall running and health and wellbeing of the body and much of this is believed to be down to how well our microbiota is thriving.
One of the major roles attributed to the microbiota is the functioning of our immune system. If we have a thriving microbiota, that is, probiotic bacteria and viruses that are both numerous and varied, then we’re more likely to have a healthy immune system. These probiotics then help to modulate the immune system, supporting its work defending us against pathogens.
We can help to keep our microbiota healthy by taking probiotic supplements and consuming fermented foods that naturally contain probiotics. Probiotic rich fermented food include yoghurt, kefir, tempeh, kimchi, miso and kombucha.
Kefir is a type of probiotic milk drink whilst tempeh is fermented tofu. Kimchi is similar to sauerkraut and contains fermented vegetables, primarily cabbage. Miso is a soyabean paste often made into soup and kombucha is a fermented tea that’s consumed cold and has a slight fizz to it.
