When you’re trying to lose weight there’s one thing you should never do and that’s cut back too much. At Health Natural, we only promote losing weight in a healthy way, by eating smaller portions, exercising more, and consuming more healthy protein and carbs. No matter how slowly your weight loss is going, you should never ever starve yourself. Starving will only lead to bingeing and not only is it super-unhealthy, as it can lead to serious health problems, it’s simply not sustainable.

The only time you should ever contemplate going without food is if you’re intermittently fasting, which is where you cycle between eating and not eating, over a day or throughout the week. Intermittent fasting isn’t dangerous as long as it’s done correctly and research has shown it boosts weight loss, as it kicks off a process called metabolic switching. This triggers your body to draw its energy from ketones, which are stored in fat, as opposed to glucose, which is stored in the liver.

If you’re going to be intermittently fasting, you still need to eat an adequate number of calories and the exact amount you’ll require will be based on a variety of factors, including your age and activity level. Try this calorie calculator to discover how much you should eat if you want to maintain your weight, as this figure will also help you work out how much you should cut back, if you want to lose.

As a rule of thumb, you should never eat less than 1300 calories a day if you’re a woman, or 1600 if you’re male – and many people, particularly those with active lifestyles, will need to eat much more than this. Remember, there are lots of things you can do to cut back on your calories, without ever having to resort to starving yourself – but if you need some inspiration, why not check out our 10 Easy Ways to Reduce Calories?
