The human body requires a range of different vitamins in order to function properly, most of which are obtained through our diet. Along with the minerals, the vitamins are known as the micronutrients, and are required in small amounts. The B vitamins and vitamin C are known as the water soluble vitamins, as they dissolve in water and are transported around the body in watery fluids.

Vitamin D is one of the fat soluble vitamins, as are vitamins A, E and K. This means that in a similar way to oil, they don’t dissolve in water and are instead absorbed by the fatty tissues of the body.

Only a relatively small amount of our vitamin D intake comes from our diet. The majority of it is manufactured by the body when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Therefore, we can be at risk of developing a deficiency, especially in autumn and winter.
