16. Walnuts
Walnuts may be small, but they’re packed with nutrients that are excellent for both your overall health, and the health of your heart.
They contain a helping of Omega-3, which can lower risk factors associated with heart disease. Omega-3 prevents blood platelets from clumping together and therefore reduces the risk of developing blood clots that could lead to heart attacks and strokes. It helps to keep the walls of your arteries clear of blockages and reduces levels of inflammation in your body.
They’re also packed with antioxidants. In fact, they have more antioxidants than any other nut. These antioxidants control the cholesterol in your body. Along with those great antioxidants are polyphenols, which help to reduce inflammation in the body and decrease your risk of heart disease and cancer. Walnuts are delicious in salads or sprinkled over creamy pasta dishes. You can also use them instead of pine nuts in homemade pesto.
