4. Eat prebiotics rich foods
Prebiotics are indigestible plant fibres that promote the growth of beneficial gut flora as they are a food source for healthy bacteria. As they can’t be digested by the small intestine they frequently come into contact with gut bacteria, helping to stimulate and boost the growth of beneficial strains, such as bifidobacteria.
Prebiotics offer a host of health benefits, from increased calcium absorption to a boosted immune system and metabolism. Research from Imperial College London found that they could play an important role in reducing the effects of IBS, by significantly increasing the amount of faecal bifidobacteria. If you want to increase your intake of prebiotics, it’s easy to buy a quality supplement from most reputable health stores, or, if you prefer to source your prebiotics from food, try upping your intake of whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables.
