When it comes to adding flavour to vegetables, it’s not all about herbs, as adding a dash of spice helps to ramp up the taste too. Blend in a touch of cumin, ginger or cayenne pepper to give a smokier flavour to your dishes, or up the complexity a notch by trying out spice combinations and create your own mix.

Radish tastes sublime when garnished with mint, rosemary and a dash of ginger, while a cajun spice blend paired with olive oil would be perfect for grilled artichokes, bell peppers, or broccoli. Artichokes are yummy when diced with sweet potato and garnished with coriander and cumin, or make a homemade spicy guacamole out of mashed avocado, lime, garlic, tomato and cayenne.

Try pan-frying some sweet potato, cauliflower, onion and garlic in a dash of olive oil and mix in some yoghurt, lemon, tandoori spice, and turmeric, for a tasty vegetarian twist on a tandoori that can be cooked in mere minutes. Serve on a bed of rice and pair with some naan bread for a satisfying meal that’s simply loaded with vegetable goodness!

The health benefits of including spices in your dishes are immense – studies have found that cumin has the potential to lower levels of bad cholesterol, while cayenne pepper can significantly improve musculoskeletal pain and cramps. Turmeric has demonstrated significant antioxidant properties, especially when combined with black pepper, as the active compound piperine combines with the curcumin, to produce a potent effect. As well as being brilliant for your health, spices are extremely versatile too, so they lend themselves really well to vegetable dishes.
