10 Foods to Avoid When Trying to Lose Weight

9. Pizza

Who doesn’t love a slice or two of pizza? But sadly, pizza is a big no no for weight loss, and this is for various reasons. First up is the base – more often than not made with refined white flour, it’s basically white bread, and lots of it – and as we discovered above, white bread floods the blood with sugar soon after eating, creating unstable blood sugar levels, and soon, hunger.

Not only that, even a plain cheese pizza is fully loaded with calories – because of the cheese! Cheese is very high in saturated fat, meaning that it’s super high in calories. Quite often, a pizza is covered in more than one type of cheese, adding to the fat and calorie values. Plus of course, we often add toppings such as ham and other processed meats, that are also high in calories and saturated fat.

Even if we go for a veggie option, we’re still consuming dairy fat and refined white flour. And you know that delicious shiny, oily glaze that pizzas often have? That’s literally fat, sprayed on from a can, flavoured with garlic to make its taste good.

Despite knowing all of this, we know it can be difficult denying ourself a slice of the good stuff. So to indulge, opt for a pizza chain that offers lower calorie options with some of the middle cut out and replaced with salad. Also, make pizza an occasional weekend treat, rather than a regular weekly mainstay.
