11. Energy and cereal bars
Granola and cereal bars are often marketed as healthy options for breakfast when we’re busy and short on time to make something filling and nutritious. But sadly, as the old adage goes, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is, and in the case of cereal bars, it most definitely is.
It may come as a surprise but a seemingly healthy, nutrient loaded granola bar, can contain as much sugar as a chocolate bar, just in a slightly different form. Often, these bars will contain honey, or another type of sugar syrup such as agave or maple syrup. This helps to stick all the oats, nuts and seeds together, as well as make it taste good.
The problem is, honey, agave and maple syrup (along with all the other “healthy” sugar alternatives out there) all have one thing in common – they’re all still sugar!
If you’re pushed for time in the morning, try eating slices of apple dipped in peanut butter or a handful of mixed unsalted nuts with yoghurt. Or, try one of our healthy breakfast recipes, some of which can be prepared the night before!
