9. The Best Breakfast Sausage Sandwich
On first thought, adding sausages to a list of healthy breakfast ideas doesn’t really seem to fit, but sausages don’t have to be unhealthy. Sausages made using processed meat such as pork are high in unhealthy saturated fat.
However, opt for sausages made using chicken or turkey, and you’ll be consuming lower amounts of saturated fat. As a general rule, if you’re looking for a healthier sausage, choose fresh ones and brands that use fewer added ingredients – the fewer ingredients listed on the packaging, the better as they’ll likely contains less saturated fat and salt.
Or, choose plant-based sausages made using soya, vegetables or mushrooms. Again, even when choosing vegetarian or vegan sausages, choose those with fewer ingredients as they can still fall under the highly processed category. How we cook our sausages will also determine how healthy they are. Frying sausages in oil adds fats and calories, but grilling them will keep levels of fat lower.
Also, choosing wholemeal bread over white bread will make things healthier still. Wholemeal bread hasn’t been processed to remove the wheatgerm (and therefore beneficial B vitamins) like white bread has, and it’ll be digested much more slowly, helping to keep you fuller for longer. Choose a ketchup with no added sugar and et voila, the healthiest version of a sausage sandwich!
