Avoid Processed Food
Processed food, including processed meats, pies, pizzas, ready meals, crisps, sweets, cakes and biscuits all taste good, we get that. But they only taste good because they’ve been manufactured to do so. These kinds of foods are usually made using MSG, a flavour enhancer that gives fast and processed foods their addictive tastes. But MSG is notoriously bad for our health and actually makes you feel hungrier.
MSG has been found to change the functioning of the thymus and the spleen – both organs that play an important role in immunity by creating white blood cells and antibodies. When we consume large amounts of MSG, it causes oxidative stress within the thymus and spleen, which causes them to make fewer white blood cells. Also, MSG reduces the levels of interleukin that can be produced, which is important for sending signals to and from the immune system.
But it’s not just MSG that can mess with immunity. Foods high in sugar, fats and salt can lead to inflammation and a dampening of the immune system. So keep these foods as rare treats and fill up on the healthy foods we mentioned above.
