4. Shop Bought Soups

On a cold, dreary day or when you’re feeling under the weather, there’s nothing quite like a steaming bowl of soup, is there? But shop bought soups often contain shocking levels of salt, even the tins of soup labelled as healthy and full of natural ingredients. (Salt is a natural ingredient!)

High salt foods make us feel thirsty, which we can easily confuse for hunger, meaning that we’ll be searching for more food sooner rather than later when actually all we might need is a glass of water.

Homemade soups might sound daunting, but they’re super simple and you don’t need a fancy soup maker either, just a casserole dish and a stick blender. One of the easiest is butternut squash soup – roast chopped butternut squash along with some carrots and sweat down some chopped onions, garlic and celery. Mix everything together and add a pint of low sodium vegetable stock. Simmer, blend and serve. Simple! To make soup a filling, nutritious meal, eat it with a couple of slices of wholemeal or brown bread with a thin covering of olive spread (which contains beneficial fats) to add fibre and slow release carbohydrates.
