Curry, chilli and other spicy foods can have negative consequences for our sleep patterns for several reasons. First of all, they can lead to acid reflux and indigestion that can be so uncomfortable, they prevent us from sleeping.

Also, if we eat a large spicy meal in the evening and we then lay down before it’s been fully digested, the stomach acid working hard to digest a heavy meal can travel upwards leading to heartburn which again will prevent us from getting quality sleep.

Finally, eating hot, spicy foods will temporarily increase our body temperature, which may also negatively affect our sleep – a higher body temperature has been linked with disturbed sleep. So for these reasons, it’s best to eat spicy food as early in the evening as possible.

Hot spicy food can lead to acid reflux, indigestion and heartburn, as well as an increase in body temperature which can all negatively affect sleep.
