Oats are one of the healthiest high carbohydrate foods as they’re rich in a type of soluble fibre called oat beta glucans. Soluble fibre dissolves in water from the gut during digestion, forming a jelly-like substance, thereby slowing down the passage of food through the gut. This has the advantage of making us feel fuller for longer and less likely to snack.

But most advantageous of all, oat beta glucans also slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and cholesterol into the gut. Therefore, consuming oats helps to reduce our blood sugar and cholesterol levels, both of which are advantageous for our heart health and our overall wellbeing.

Summary:

One cup of oats contains 54g of carbohydrate, and they’re high in fibre called oat beta glucans. Beta glucans help to stabilise blood sugar levels and hunger and reduce cholesterol absorption.
