Eat Antioxidant Rich Foods to prevent tridemic

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralise or ‘mop up’ free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules of oxygen that have lost an electron. They move around the body trying to find spare electrons and in doing so, can cause damage to our cells, including the cells of our immune system, potentially weakening our defences to tridemic viruses. Antioxidants selflessly donate electrons to free radicals, causing them to become stable again.

Free radicals enter the body as a result of a poor diet, stress, overexercising, smoking and breathing in environmental pollutants. They’re also a normal by-product of biological processes such as breathing and digestion, therefore, they’re hard to avoid. So, making sure we have plenty of antioxidants around to neutralise free radicals will help to support a healthy immune system.

The best way to do this is to eat antioxidant rich foods. Fruits and vegetables are extremely rich in antioxidants, in particular, kale, broccoli, blueberries and goji berries, but it isn’t just fresh produce. Dark chocolate, green tea and red wine are also great antioxidant sources, but obviously two of these should be consumed in moderation!
