The Role of Vitamin D in the Body

Role in the Body

Vitamin D helps to regulate the fine balance between the minerals, calcium and phosphate, in the cells of the body. It therefore has an important role in the health of our teeth and bones, that rely on these minerals for remineralisation, a process that keeps them strong.

There’s also evidence that vitamin D has an important role in the health of the immune system. It’s thought that vitamin D helps to maintain a strong immune system which then protects us from conditions such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, that are linked to autoimmune problems.

A deficiency in vitamin D is also linked to seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Also known as seasonal depression, symptoms of SAD include losing interest in the things you used to enjoy, feeling irritable, stressed, anxious or depressed, lethargy, a lack of energy and finding it difficult to concentrate.
