Sodas, colas and other fizzy drinks all contain high levels of sugar, and drinking them before bed when we’re at our least active can lead to weight gain. Often, they contain caffeine too, especially cola, which is well-known for its ability to keep us awake – not what we need before bed.

In fact, studies show that those of us who regularly sleep for less than five hours each night are more likely to drink sugary, caffeinated drinks than those who achieve the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep most nights . Not only do fizzy drinks affect our sleep, they can increase our chances of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Sugar sweetened, caffeinated drinks are best avoided in the evening due to their ability to maintain our alertness and cause us to fall asleep later, stay asleep for shorter periods of time, cause us to wake during the night more often and increase our risk of chronic disease.
