It seems as though eating something so simple and readily available that can lead to so many positive health outcomes is too good to be true, doesn’t it? That all of these health benefits alone would be enough to help improve our mood. But the science backs all of these benefits up. Not only that, studies suggest that nuts have a positive impact on our emotional wellbeing in other ways, too.

Nuts are rich in an amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan is necessary for the brain to produce serotonin; a type of chemical called a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate the mood and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. The more tryptophan we have (to a certain extent), the more the brain can produce serotonin, the more lifted our mood.

Some nuts, in particular, Brazil nuts, are also rich in selenium and zinc. Both of these minerals are essential for good brain health – a deficiency in either is linked to a higher risk of developing a low mood and depression.
